Doc. Junichi Toyota, badacz z Center for Cognitive Semiotics, na Uniwersytecie w Lund otworzył I Seminarium Kognitywistyczne UMCS. Jego prezentacja “Sense of emptiness: cultural differences between East and West” odbyła się na Wydziale Filozofii i Socjologii 24 października 2011 r.
Abstrakt wystąpienia:
„The aim of this talk is to investigate how East Asian countries and Western countries differ in perception and understanding of emptiness. It has been claimed by some previous works (e.g. Nisbett 2003; Nisbett and Masuda 2007) that Western people tend to focus on an object and less attention is paid to the background, but the East Asians tend to pay due attention to both a certain object and background. This clear difference often reflects on how empty slot is appreciated in East Asian countries, but not in Western countries. The obvious, as argued in this talk, is arts such as composition of paintings or flower arrangement. In East Asian countries, empty slots are left on purpose and they play an important role in creating a sense of beauty. This type of difference is well applicable beyond arts and sense of emptiness is very pervasive in different aspect of lives in Eastern Asia. This talk particularly talks about the applicability of this worldview to the grammatical formation of languages spoken in Asia and Europe. ”

Junichi Toyota pełni funkcję docenta na Uniwersytecie w Lund (Szwecja) w Centrum Języka i Literatury. Jest on również jednym z badaczy Centre for Cognitive Semiotics – projektu powołanego do życia i kierowanego przez Gorana Sonessona i Jordana Zlateva. Ponadto Junichi Toyota wykłada jako profesor wizytujący na Uniwersytecie Belgradzkim (Serbia).
Jego zainteresowania obejmują szerokie spektrum dziedzin, w szczególności: językoznawstwo, antropologię czy kognitywistykę. Jest on autorem licznych artykułów poświęconych lingwistyce historycznej i lingwistyce kognitywnej; jest również autorem lub współautorem kilku monografii:
